This game was hand patchworked by an artisan who migrated from the Nagar Parkar region of Sindh to Kutch, a remote desert region of western India. Highly skilled in fine geometric suf and kharek style embroideries, women of Nagar Parkar turn their keen sense of patterning to patchwork once their eyesight begins to wane. Traditionally, they would make patchwork quilts for the cold desert winters, and dowry bags for their daughters, such as the bagcho in which this game is packed. Today, as members of Kala Raksha Trust, artisans utilize their skills to earn a living for their families.
While the "goats" of Vagh Aur Bakri are usually simple stones, the "goats" of this set were adapted from another desert art. They are supari, betel nut, which women cover in crochet for auspicious home decorations, adding a mirror at the bottom to ward off the evil eye.
Vagh Aur Bakri is originally a children's game, but players of Any age can enjoy it.

| Instructions | RULES OF THE GAME Usually there are two players. One has the tigers, the other has the goats. However, two or three people may play as a team, making sure to alternate play between tigers and goats. The object of the game, if you are the-tigers, is to capture all the goats. The object if you are goats is to surround the tigers to prevent them from capturing you. If all the goats have been captured, the tigers win. If all the tigers have been surrounded by goats and are unable to move, the goats win. The starting positions are shown in the diagram. The goats cannot be captured in this position as long as they are in a group. 1. Players alternate turns, moving one of their pieces each turn. Either tiger or goat can make the first move. 2. A move can be made in any direction from one point of intersection along any line to the next intersection. 3. A tiger captures a goat only if in moving to his next point he can land where a goat is. He can only capture if he is able to move to the next intersection beyond the one on which the goat is. This must be accomplished in the same move and continuing in the same direction without turning a corner. In effect, hopping over the goat is a capture. Like a real tiger, he needs a place to rest after a successful hunt. A goat cannot be captured if there is no empty space on the next intersection of the same line. 4. A tiger can make more than one capture in a turn if he is able to continue hopping to points of rest. The resting point must always be along the same line of the captured goat. But then the tiger can turn to capture another goat in the same turn. 5. Goats can surround a tiger and prevent him from moving if they block all possible intersection points and resting points to which he might move. |
