Profenofos is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme acetyl cholinesterase, which is essential for the transmission of impulses between nerve cells. It binds tightly to and inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and disrupts nerve impulse transmission by acting in synaptic regions of insect nerve cell.
