Palms are beautiful indoor plants that are native to tropical and subtropical regions. There are about 2,600 species of palm trees spread over 181 genera within the Arecaceae family of plants. Palms have great air purification qualities and hence are a great addition to your home. While growing palms indoors, make sure you keep them near a window so they receive bright indirect sunlight and also good air circulation. Palms do not like dingy and dark spaces. So do not keep them in staircases or a dark room if you do not have a window around!
Soil– Palms prefer soft sandy soil. The soil should be well draining, moisture retaining and nutritious . You can add sand or perlite for drainage, this will ensure that the palms are not overwatered. You should also add cocopeat for moisture retention and vermicompost for nutrition. 33% sand, 33% cocopeat and 33% vermicompost will make a great soil mix for palms.
Water- Palms do not like being overwatered. So never let your palm’s root ball sit in water.Water the palms only when the top 2 inches of the soil is dry. Make sure that the bottom trays (if any) do not hold water as it leads to root rot.
Placement & Sunlight –This plant requires adequate sunlight. While growing palms indoors, make sure you keep them near a window so they receive bright indirect sunlight and good air circulation. Lack of sunlight and ventilation often are the most common causes of palms dying.
Fertilization - Once every month, add a handful of compost / vermicompost to the palms. This will give them adequate nutrition. Do ensure to not add any fertilizer when the plants are dormant, e.g. during extreme winters in Northern India.
Pest protection - Palms are not typically prone to pest attacks. As a preventive measure, once a month, spray your plants with neem oil spray. To make neem oil spray, mix 5 ml neem oil in 1 litre water, with 2 drops of liquid soap.
